And the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’ ” (Matthew 4:3-4, NASB)
When Satan came to tempt Jesus in the wilderness, this was his first attempt. In this temptation, he came with two cunning strategies.
Call into question Christ's relationship with the Father. "If You are the Son of God.” This wording seeks to imply the possibility that Jesus may not truly be the Son. Since he did this with our Lord Himself, is it any wonder that Satan often seeks to cast doubt on the believer's relationship with the Father?
Base Jesus's relationship with the Father on His perceived provision. It is implied that if the stones do not become bread then Jesus is not truly the Father's Son. This is a ploy that Satan leverages against the Christian often. He will point to some need or lack that you have. Then he will seek to make the meeting of that need the basis of your relationship with your heavenly Father.
Jesus responds to both of these tactics with one answer. He explains that bread (the simple meeting of needs) is not the basis of one's life in God. It is God's Word. When Satan tries to call your relationship with God into question based on earthly provisions (or the lack thereof), he is attempting to turn your attention from the one place that anchors your faith. We should hold to God's promises in His Word, just as Jesus did.
Don't base your Father's love on bread and provision. Base it upon the revelation of His Word.
